Overview

An aluminium chain curtain for a doorway, 90 cm wide by 210 cm tall. The chains are oxidation treated, so they resist rust and corrosion rather than pitting after a season by a back door.

The header strip hangs on two screws. That is the whole installation, and it means the curtain lifts off in seconds when you want to clean it or move it.

You walk straight through it. Nothing catches, nothing tangles round you, and it falls back into place behind you without a latch or a spring.

It doubles as a room divider. The chains keep air moving while marking a space, which is why they turn up in kitchens, conservatories, cafes, bars and retail shops.

Two hanging hooks are in the box. Choose black or silver at the same price.

Shipping & returns

Delivery across Europe in 5 to 7 days. It is free on orders of €60 or more, and a flat €22 below that.

You can cancel within 14 days of receiving your order without giving a reason, under regulation 20 of S.I. No. 484 of 2013, which implements the EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU. You then have a further 14 days to send the goods back, and you pay the cost of returning them.

A screen cut to your own measurements is made to your specification, so regulation 13(1)(c) removes the cancellation right once we have started making it. A standard size you cut down yourself at home keeps the full right until you cut it.

If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described we put it right at no cost to you, return postage included, under the Consumer Rights Act 2022.

How it works in a real doorway

Chain Door Curtain

A chain curtain is the commercial answer to a doorway that gets used constantly. There's nothing to open and nothing to close. You walk at it, the chains part, and they hang straight again behind you. Flies get a moving barrier rather than an open door.

Chain Door Curtain

The chains are aluminium with an oxidation-treated surface. That matters more than it sounds: a back door, a kitchen or a conservatory is a damp, warm place, and untreated metal pits and stains there. Aluminium does not rust, and the surface treatment holds the finish.

Chain Door Curtain

It hangs on a header strip that sits on two screws. Putting it up is a five-minute job with a drill and a level, and taking it down is a matter of lifting it off. That is the practical advantage over anything fixed: cleaning a chain curtain means carrying it to the sink, not scrubbing it in the doorway.

Chain Door Curtain

Plenty of people buy these for the look rather than the flies. As a room divider the chains define a space without walling it off, and they keep the light and the air moving through. In a cafe or a shop they do both jobs at once.

Choosing a chain door curtain

5 min read Simple Screens

What a chain curtain is for

A chain curtain is the commercial answer to a doorway that never stops being used. There is nothing to open and nothing to close. You walk at it, the chains part, and they hang straight again behind you.

That is the whole argument against a hinged screen door in a busy doorway. A screen door in a kitchen or a shop gets propped open by the second week, and once it is propped it is not doing anything. A chain curtain can't be propped open.

Aluminium, and why the finish matters

The chains are aluminium with an oxidation-treated surface.

Both halves of that are worth understanding. Aluminium does not rust, which already puts it ahead of a steel chain in a doorway. The oxidation treatment then makes the surface highly resistant to corrosion, which matters because the places these get hung are warm and damp: back doors, kitchens, conservatories, anywhere with steam or weather.

The result is a curtain you clean rather than maintain. Wipe the chains down and that is the job.

Putting it up

The header strip hangs on two screws. Mark the positions, check they are level, drill, and lift the strip on. Five minutes with a drill.

Two hanging hooks come in the box, so there is nothing else to buy. The one thing to note is that it does need those two screws, which rules it out if you rent somewhere that allows no holes at all. The string curtain hangs on a tension rod instead and needs nothing drilled.

Taking it down again

This is the part that gets overlooked and then appreciated. Because the strip sits on the screws rather than being fixed to them, the whole curtain lifts off in seconds.

Cleaning a chain curtain in place means scrubbing at head height in a doorway. Cleaning one you can carry to a sink takes a couple of minutes. The same applies if you want the doorway clear for an evening or you are moving it to another room.

As a room divider

Plenty of these get bought with insects nowhere in the reasoning. As a divider, chain marks out a zone without walling it off, and it keeps light and air moving between the two spaces.

It also gives a degree of privacy: enough to shield a back-of-house area from a casual glance without shutting it away. In cafes, bars and shops it usually ends up doing both jobs at once.

Choosing black or silver

Same curtain, same price, different room. Silver reads industrial and bounces light around, which suits a kitchen or a retail space. Black recedes, so in a domestic doorway it draws less attention to itself. Neither performs better than the other.
