Overview

This kit comes in five sizes, 100 x 100 cm to 200 x 200 cm, so there is one above almost any opening. You cut it down to your own window, so order the size above your opening rather than below it.

Grey fibreglass woven 18 x 16 to the square inch, with 66% open area. It stops flies, mosquitoes and wasps and keeps the view and the breeze.

The screen sits on a slim PVC frame held by a self-adhesive magnetic strip. Nothing is drilled, so it suits rentals, and it lifts off cleanly when you want it gone.

Finger tabs on the bottom corners let you pull a corner away to open or close the window. Let go and the magnets pull it back into place.

Choose a white, brown or black frame at the same price. The right one more or less disappears against your window.

Shipping & returns

Delivery across Europe in 5 to 7 days. It is free on orders of €60 or more, and a flat €22 below that.

You can cancel within 14 days of receiving your order without giving a reason, under regulation 20 of S.I. No. 484 of 2013, which implements the EU Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU. You then have a further 14 days to send the goods back, and you pay the cost of returning them.

A screen cut to your own measurements is made to your specification, so regulation 13(1)(c) removes the cancellation right once we have started making it. A standard size you cut down yourself at home keeps the full right until you cut it.

If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described we put it right at no cost to you, return postage included, under the Consumer Rights Act 2022.

How it works in a real doorway

Magnetic Window Screen Standard Mesh (Grey) 100 x 100 cm

The problem with most window fly screens is that they're made for a window that doesn't exist. Openings are rarely a standard size, and in an older house no two are the same. This one is cut to fit. You order the kit above your opening, trim the PVC frame with a blade or strong scissors, and you get a screen made for that window rather than near enough for it.

Magnetic Window Screen Standard Mesh (Grey) 100 x 100 cm

Grey fibreglass woven 18 x 16 to the square inch, with 66% open area. It stops flies, mosquitoes and wasps and keeps the view and the breeze. Standard grey mesh is the one most people want. The weave is open enough that you barely notice it from inside, and it still stops everything that normally gets in through an open window.

Magnetic Window Screen Standard Mesh (Grey) 100 x 100 cm

It fixes with a magnetic strip that sticks to the frame face. Nothing is drilled and nothing is permanent, which matters if you rent, and the strip lifts away without pulling the finish off. To open the window you pull a finger tab on a bottom corner, and when you let go the magnets take the screen back. That's the whole job, which is why these get used rather than left in a cupboard.

Magnetic Window Screen Standard Mesh (Grey) 100 x 100 cm

Against a traditional aluminium framed screen the difference is bulk. The PVC frame is slim and colour-matched to white, brown or black, so from a few paces the screen reads as part of the window. Fit them across a room and the effect is tidier, not more cluttered.

The complete guide

Fitting a magnetic window screen

5 min read Simple Screens

Which size covers your window?

This kit covers an opening up to 100 cm wide and 100 cm tall, which suits a standard single window or a casement sash. Because you cut the frame down, the number to think about is a ceiling rather than an exact match. Order the kit above your opening and trim it. Order below it and there is nothing you can do.

Measure the frame recess rather than the glass. The magnetic strip sticks to the flat face of the frame around the opening, so that face is the surface the screen has to reach.

If your window is bigger than the largest kit in the range, ask for a quote before you order. These are made to size, so an unusual window is a measurement, not a dead end.

Choosing between the two meshes

This one comes in standard mesh (grey).

If you're not sure, think about where you live rather than what is in the room. Near water, marshland or the coast, the smaller biting insects are the ones that ruin an evening, and ordinary fly screen lets them through. Away from all that, this grey mesh is the one to get. It is more open, so you see out better than you would through the tighter midge weave, and it handles the insects most houses actually get.

Fitting it

Wipe the frame face clean and let it dry, because the adhesive only gets one go at it. Run the magnetic strip around the opening. Cut the PVC frame to your measurements with a sharp blade or a strong pair of scissors, fit the four corner pieces, and trim the mesh. Press the screen onto the strip and it's done.

The first window takes about twenty minutes while you work out the order of things. After that they go up quickly. On an exposed window, fit the two wind clips as well, which stop the screen flexing in a gust.

Living with it

Opening the window is the part people ask about, and it's the part that decides whether a screen gets used. Pull the finger tab on a bottom corner, that corner lifts, you open or close the window, and letting go brings the screen back. No catches, nothing to unclip, nothing to store.

When it gets dusty, take the whole screen off and wash it with water and a little detergent, then let it dry fully before refitting. Keep the magnetic strip clear of grit so the screen keeps sitting flush. Some people leave them up all year and some take them down in autumn. Either works.

Why fibreglass mesh

The mesh is woven from glass yarn and coated in vinyl. It doesn't rust, corrode or stain, and it stays flexible rather than going brittle and splitting after a couple of summers, which is what kills cheap plastic netting. It's also non-combustible, which is worth knowing for a screen that sits in a window all summer.
